Why Do Hydraulic Cylinder Seals Keep Failing?
Hydraulic cylinder seals often fail repeatedly because the seal is being damaged by a condition outside the seal itself, such as contaminated fluid, a scored rod, worn guides, side load, misalignment, excessive pressure or temperature, incompatible fluid, or installation damage. The failed seal shape and timing of the failure are valuable root-cause evidence.
Seal failure includes external leakage, internal bypass, progressive loss of sealing interference, cuts or nicks, extrusion, tearing, twisting, swelling, hardening, abnormal friction, or repeated short service life of rod, piston, wiper, or static seals.
Common root causes include abrasive contamination, debris under the seal lip, damaged dynamic surfaces, progressive wear or compression set, incorrect seal material or profile, installation damage, excessive extrusion gap, pressure spikes, overheating, fluid incompatibility, guide wear, side load, misalignment, and a bent rod.
