Can You Fill or Sand a Deep Gouge?
No. If the gouge cuts through the chrome, do not fill and hand-sand it. Remove only a minor raised burr when the service procedure allows it; otherwise send the rod for repair or replacement.

Does the Damage Pass Through the Rod Seal?
Check whether the damaged area passes through the wiper and rod seal during normal stroke. If it does, inspect both before reuse.

Raised Burrs and Chrome Loss
Look for a raised burr, chipped or lifting chrome, exposed rod material, cracks, and corrosion. Do not pull a sharp damaged area through the rod seal.

Rod Diameter and Straightness
Measure rod diameter around the damage. If the rod may be bent, check straightness/runout and compare it with the OEM or repair-shop limit.

Rod-End Damage
If the impact is near the rod end, inspect the threads, eye, clevis, shoulder, and welds. Rechroming will not fix structural damage.
Record for the repair shop: rod diameter, damage location, whether it passes through the rod seal, gouge size/depth if measurable, burrs, chrome loss, straightness/runout, cracks, rod-end damage, and leakage.

Do not reject a rod by gouge depth alone. Use the OEM or repair-shop limit for the actual rod.
